Mr. Barker graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science degree, and from the Citadel with a Master of Business Administration degree.

After graduation, he served his country as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy stationed in Charleston, South Carolina. During his Naval service, he served on board USS Brumby during the Cold War, among other things carrying out missions in Lebanon in support of our Marines deployed there; in the Mediterranean Sea in support of various NATO operations, including during our confrontation with Libya; and in the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf region, including during confrontations with Iran and Iraq. Mr. Barker also served on an admiral's staff, and was decorated for his service.

Following his naval service, Mr. Barker graduated cum laude from Pepperdine University School of Law in Malibu, California and practiced in Los Angeles, California before returning to Charleston, South Carolina to raise his family and practice law.

As a family man, Mr. Barker’s four children are his pride and joy.

More than a witness to the emotional consequences of divorce, he considers himself an advocate of the family, challenging himself to continue his education so that families in divorce crisis not only survive the legal process, but also continue to thrive.

With two-thirds of his Masters level coursework behind him, Mr. Barker expects to be licensed as a professional counselor by the end of 2009.

Just as Mr. Barker’s advocacy and compassion for his clients is second to none, his involvement as a member of his religious community is also rooted in service and a passion for helping others.

He is the leader of two purpose-driven ministries; DivorceCare for individuals navigating the emotional and often complicated aspects of divorce, and Stephen Ministry for individuals who find themselves in personal crisis. DivorceCare is a supportive group environment, whereas Stephen Ministry is one-on-one ministry where he serves both as a Stephen Minister, as well as the leader of 12 Stephen Ministers in his (Episcopal) parish.
